There’s several things going on in this photo that we can use.
We’ve got a SWAT Team about to raid a house. They’re also in breathing masks with their own air tanks/filters. And the place is covered in trash.
The trash is what gave me my idea. Like, why is there trash everywhere? Cause the people are messy?
No.
Because there’s no trash pickup.
How come?
Because the entire area has been blocked off. Several blocks or section of the city.
Why?
Because some kind of outbreak. Maybe a dirty bomb went off? Maybe there was riots afterwards.
Whatever the initial cause, the entire area has become a war zone in an American city/town.
Services stopped and gangs took over controlling stuff. Supplies, food, water, etc.
These guys are responding to intel that suggests there’s another bomb. (?) and they’re going in force to take it out before more of the city spirals out of control.
Maybe it’s a chemical or something, hence the masks/filters.
Whatever the original cause is, I don’t see this having a nice neat wrap up ending. They may stop the second bomb but the area is falling more and more into decline.
The police may have no choice but to write the section off as the gangs have become too strong and no one in the government (local, State, Federal) has the stomach for doing what would be required to take the area back under control.
Two things could happen after the police pullback. These things start spreading across America, where maybe even whole cities fall victim to rising criminal groups.
Or a rich person/company is hired or undertakes it themselves and sends in an army of mercenaries to eliminate the criminals once and for all which causes problems of a completely different sort.
All of which would have ripple effects throughout The Merc Series.
