Creativity Post 23

Tonight’s post is another location piece idea. Mainly it captures a vibe I’m going for in an upcoming project. But first here’s some background on how that project came to be.

Last summer while writing the rough draft of Humid Days, Hot Nights (A Merc Series Collection) I came up with an idea for a story that takes place right after that. The collection is a series of stories all set during a heatwave in Boston in August 2015. The guys of Red Diamond are relaxing in Miami having just finished up a big job there. The girls meanwhile are relaxing back home enjoying the time off, though Bobbi should be teaching her classes ?. Their friends Tara and Sienna are visiting from Vegas. Both are bounty hunters and are technically working a job too. Sienna mentions getting the deed to a cabin from one of her ex-husbands.

Her ex is known to be pretty shady so Sienna wants the girls to take the following weekend off and go check the place out with her and see what the deal is with it.

I have an outline all in place for the story and how it all ties in to other events and plan to start a rough draft of it this summer but that doesn’t mean I can’t keep an eye out on other things to add to it.

Which is a long way of saying that’s how I might use this pic of an old creepy church.

The vibe I’m going for with this story is a fun girl’s weekend that’s a bit tongue in cheek to slasher flicks while still adding a creepy/unsettling tone. That feeling when you’re walking in the woods on a nice sunny day and everything is perfect but then you hear a weird noise and realize how quiet it suddenly is and you’re out in the middle of nowhere and of course your cell gets no signal.

Now call me crazy, it’s okay, most people do, ? but this pic to me is exactly that type of vibe. It’s sunny out so it looks cool and fun to check out. But what happens once it’s night time? What if you hear a noise? Or see a light from a distance and track it back to this place? What if the place you’re checking out is the only place around so there’s no reason for other people to be up there.

Of course you still have to account for hikers or people camping etc. So those are things that will be addressed.

I’m looking forward to this project as it will be an interesting challenge for me to write something that’s a fun story while still having that creeping sense of dread over your shoulder that somethings not quite right here. Whether the church actually makes it in, we’ll have to wait and see. ?
